Inspiration Point Trail

Exploring Palo Corona Park and Inspiration Point

The hike at Palo Corona Park offers a beautiful mix of nature, reclaiming human-made landscapes and breathtaking views that reward every step. What was once a meandering cart path of a golf course has been steadily overtaken by nature. Grasses and brush creep over the concrete, softening its edges and turning it into a wild and peaceful retreat.

Former gold course reclaimed by nature

The start of the Palo Corona Regional Park trail system.

The journey begins with a leisurely stroll along reclaimed paths, weaving through the revitalized grounds of the park. Following the paved paths makes for an easy start, and a small bridge crossing a gentle river provides a tranquil midpoint before the incline begins. After about a mile, the trail transitions dramatically, climbing the hillside with large switchbacks. These twists and turns offer glimpses of the valley below as you ascend toward Inspiration Point.

As the trail climbs higher, the views open up, revealing stunning views of Carmel Bay and Carmel Lagoon Beach. Around a bend, you'll find yourself gazing deep into Carmel Valley and Mt. Toro beyond, with its lush landscape stretching far into the distance.

The fields of the park are working cattle lands. If you are observant you will find signs of many different animals.

A bench at the cresting ridge lined with pine trees is perfect for pausing and catching your breath. A small bench awaits here, offering a chance to take in the tranquil beauty of the bay below. Rest for a few minutes as you are not far from your destination, letting the scent of pine and the distant sound of waves rejuvenate you before continuing your ascent.

The trail hugs the mountain ridge as it curves higher, teasing you with glimpses of the Pacific Ocean through the trees. These views motivate you to push through the final stretch. When you finally reach the cliff's edge, you'll find a memorial bench—a perfect spot to sit, reflect, and soak in the sweeping panorama of the ocean, the bay, and the surrounding hills.

This out-and-back hike spans four and a half miles and takes roughly two hours. Most of the hike is a gradual incline, and the most significant challenge is the second mile when you gain 605 feet of elevation. Inspiration Point makes an ideal spot to enjoy lunch or rest for twenty minutes before returning. Whether for the views, the sense of tranquility, or the chance to see nature's resilience firsthand, this hike is a must for outdoor enthusiasts.
